After Deady Crash, NBC 5 Prompts Changes to ‘Dangerous' Intersection

The intersection at Garden Acres Drive and Oak Grove Road has been a sore spot for several residents who live around the "dangerous" roadway.

"Drivers would speed up and down the street. We would see several accidents," said Selece Gathings.

A driver crashed through her iron fence and landed in her front yard just feet away from her house.

"The man was driving down the street and just kept going. I'm afraid for my sons to play in the front yard. I don't want them to get hurt. I have seen several accidents right here on the corner, drivers have hit my fence twice; it's just so dangerous," she said.

Gathings and several residents have been calling the City of Fort Worth to get some help.

"This has been going on for years. I called the city, and they were really nice and said they would look into it. They said many people called and that they had it on record. They kept saying 'we'll get to it, we'll get to it, we'll get to it.' That's all they kept saying," said Gathings.

The wife and mother of two said she remained patient until her husband witnessed the aftermath of a horrible crash near the same intersection.

On Oct. 10,  21-year-old Joseph "Joey" Smith was riding his motorcycle near Garden Acres Dr. and Oak Grove Rd. when he was hit by a hit and run driver.

Witnesses say the a man driving a black Honda hit Smith, and as he was laying his bike down, the driver ran over him. The driver left the scene, but did leave behind his license plate. Smith was rushed to the hospital, but later died.

"I just felt horrible for the family. This is what we didn't want to happen. I called the city again. They said someone was coming out, but no one came," said Gathings.

She called NBC 5, and after our story aired, the City of Fort Worth approved a proposal to make the intersection an all-way stop. A week later, crews painted the street, put up three new signs, added reflectors, and cleared the tree limbs away from the initial signs.

"I've had numerous people just stop by and say finally, finally we got the stop signs up. I just wish we got them up a few weeks earlier," said Gathings.

The family of Joey Smith is asking anyone who has information about their son's accident, or about the driver who hit him, to call the Fort Worth Police Department. There have been no arrests in this case.

Joey Smith graduated from Burleson High School in 2013. His family describe him as a compassionate young man. He was an organ donor. His family says even though his death was sudden and tragic, he saved eight lives through organ and blood donation.
