The quick transfer of the accused killer of a Harris County sheriff's deputy to a state mental hospital has been put off for at least two weeks.
State District Judge Susan Brown last week found 31-year-old Shannon Miles incompetent to stand trial for the shooting death last summer of Deputy Darren Goforth and ordered Miles to a mental hospital for 120 days of treatment and then re-evaluation.
Miles' attorney, Anthony Osso, asked for an emergency court hearing Monday after a state lawmaker, Sen. John Whitmire, stepped in to expedite Miles' move. The transfer process normally takes several months.
Neither prosecutors nor Osso requested the expedited move. Osso wants Miles kept in the Harris County jail to prepare his case.
Brown set another hearing for March 2 to revisit the issue.
