Motorcyclist Killed in Police Chase in Garland

A motorcyclist being pursued by Garland police was killed when he lost control and hit a woman at a bus stop.

22-year-old Edgar Esparza is being described as a good kid who made a terrible mistake. "It's a pretty strong loss, it’s my brother you know," said Arturo Moreno.

Police said officers spotted Esparza going faster than 100 mph on Interstate 635. He then exited at Northwest Highway to escape the officer, police said.

Esparza hit a car at the corner of West Centerville Road and Northwest Highway and flipped into a woman sitting at a Dallas Area Rapid Transit bus stop.

The woman was not seriously hurt and refused to be taken to the hospital.

Moreno said his younger brother’s love for speed and motorcycles led to the tragedy. "I don't have anything bad to say you know everybody loved him real much you know, he was not into problems."

"The problem is he was obviously traveling at an extremely high rate of speed, the speed limit in this stretch is 40 miles an hour and he was well in excess of 40 miles an hour," said Officer Mike Hatfield with the Garland Police Department.

"It's a good example of people that are riding motorcycles to be careful next time. So they won't go through this here," said Moreno.

Still, Moreno and his family said the 22-year-old South Garland High School graduate will always be remembered for his big heart and free spirit.
