Mother Killed, Son Critically Burned in Plano Apartment Fire: Police

A mother was killed and her child remains hospitalized with critical burns after a fire broke out inside their apartment building in Plano Monday afternoon.

The fire, which investigators called suspicous, started at about 4:40 p.m. Monday in the 6900 block of Preston Road at the Villas of Preston Creek Apartments.

Plano fire officials said the woman and her 6-year-old boy were injured and had severe burns in the fire.

The woman, who was taken to Medical Center of Plano in serious condition, later died from her injuries, according to Plano police.

The boy was flown to Parkland Memorial Hospital and was listed in critical condition Tuesday, police said.

"The prognosis yesterday when he was taken to the hospital was not good. The biggest concern was if he would make it through the evening," said Plano Police spokesman David Tilley. "My understanding is that he did and that lends a lot of hopefulness for everyone. We're hopeful he's going to progress."

No other injuries were reported and the fire is still under investigation.
