More People Turning to IV Treatment for Hangover Cure

It’s an unfortunate mistake so many people have made in the past: you had one too many drinks the night before and are suffering from a hangover that will have you sidelined for hours.

But a new med-spa in Dallas is offering an alternative to the common sports drink and medicine cure.

At the It’s a Secret Med Spa in Uptown Dallas, intravenous infusion is becoming so popular, manager Lydia Speck is no longer just offering it on weekends, but seven days a week.

“It was 30 minutes after doing it, I was back to normal,” said Speck.

Starting at $149, a person suffering from a hangover – or general dehydration – can have a registered nurse hook them up to an IV to receive fluids – including thiamine, folic acid and glucose – for about an hour.

Patients can also receive a vitamin B12 shot.

Medical director Dr. Raymond Westbrook said the difference between doing that and chugging a sports drink or water is that the fluids enter a person’s system faster.

“It’s going to improve your recovery a lot quicker, because you’re going to get more hydration in a lot quicker amount of time,” said Westbrook.

Speck agrees.

“So many people come in, and the IV concept, they’re like it’s just water. Well it’s water that is going directly into your body for hydration with a combination of vitamins. You will feel better,” Speck said.

The practice has already taken off in cities like New York and Las Vegas, and Westbrook said Dallas was a natural progression.

“Especially in the area where we are, there’s a lot of places that have good restaurants, good fun and people go out and they have a lot of fun. Sometimes they overdo it,” he said.

At Baylor Medical Center at Garland, Dr. Jane Sadler said the practice can work, but people need to treat it with caution.

“It’s a unique take on medical treatment,” said Sadler.

“Providing IV hydration gives patients a more rapid way of rehydration, of maintaining and receiving more volume than perhaps drinking fluids they can’t maintain in their gut because they’re throwing up,” Sadler added.

However, before getting hooked up to any IV, Sadler said patients need to ask questions.

“You have to be careful about where is that fluid coming from? Where is it being manufactured and how sterile is that fluid and what is in there?” she said.

Not only that, but don’t use IV treatment as an excuse to drink more, she said.

“If you feel like rehydrating your body is in some way negating all the bad you did, then your thinking process is a little disordered and I would rethink your lifestyle,” Sadler said.

Speck said she would never condone too much drinking or drinking to excess, and Westbrook said if he does see a patient too often he will have a conversation about lifestyle.

However, they do hope to provide relief for those who might occasionally let the night get away from them.

“So if you're unable to go out and do what you need to do, you're losing a day, you're losing out on opportunity, and for most people they're losing out on money,” Speck said.

“You are going to look better, feel better than you've ever have. Everyone is going to want to know how you did it. We will never tell your secret,” she added.

It’s a Secret Med Spa is located at 2510 Cedar Springs Road, Dallas, TX 75201.
