Money Woes Jeopardize This Year's St. Patrick's Day Parade

Parade needs to raise $40,000

Dallas' St. Patrick's Day Parade needs a little luck to happen this year.

Jake Levy, of Desperado's restaurant, a member of the Greenville Avenue Area Business Association, said that expanding crowds have led to expanding costs to put the parade together.

"It's the biggest St. Patrick's Day Parade in the South," he said. "We rival New York, Boston, Chicago."

Right now, the group is about $40,000 short, Levy said. The money pays for police, barricades and trash pickup.

In the past, the group raised the rates for floats, Levy. Now he is asking businesses to chip in more, if possible.

Levy said the association has set a cutoff date of Feb. 17th to secure the funds.

If the group doesn't have the money by then, the parade will not happen. But it won't affect the party or concerts that follow the parade.
