A Mexican trucker must serve six years in a U.S. prison for smuggling nearly $2 million worth of methamphetamine into Texas in a rig hauling vegetables.
Daniel Salvador Gomez-Reyes of Reynosa, Mexico, was sentenced Monday in McAllen. The 43-year-old Gomez-Reyes in October pleaded guilty to a charge related to transporting a controlled substance.
His tractor-trailer was searched last March at the Pharr-Reynosa International Bridge port of entry. Authorities discovered about 165 pounds of methamphetamine hidden in pallets under the produce including squash and cactus.
Investigators said Gomez-Reyes knew that he was hauling methamphetamine in the load from Mexico.
