Mexican Man Guilty Over $2M in Methamphetamine in Veggie Load

A Mexican trucker faces up to life in a U.S. prison for smuggling nearly $2 million worth of methamphetamine into Texas in a rig hauling squash and other vegetables.

Daniel Salvador Gomez-Reyes of Reynosa, Mexico, pleaded guilty Thursday to a charge related to transporting a controlled substance.

Prosecutors in McAllen said the tractor-trailer rig was searched in March at the Pharr-Reynosa International Bridge port of entry. The trailer had about 165 pounds of methamphetamine hidden in pallets under the produce.

Investigators say the driver said he picked up the load in Mexico and knew that he was smuggling drugs into the U.S.

He remains in custody pending sentencing next year.
