Mesquite Man Arrested in Death of 3-Year-Old Boy: Police

Warren L. Cooney was being held Saturday without bond at the Mesquite city jail

Police in Mesquite have arrested a 26-year-old man on a capital murder charge after a young child who was left in his care died.

Authorities said in a statement Friday that police were called to a home the previous day where a 3-year-old boy was found unresponsive.

The child was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead Thursday evening. An autopsy determined he had suffered numerous internal injuries.

Authorities say the child was being watched by his mother's boyfriend, identified as Warren L. Cooney.

Cooney was arrested and was being held Saturday without bond at the Mesquite city jail.

Online jail records don't indicate whether Cooney has an attorney to speak on his behalf.
