The University of North Texas opened their season against Florida International University in Miami Thursday night and Mean Green football fans gathered at the new Apogee Stadium to watch their team on the big screen.
UNT hopes its new stadium and new head football coach, Dan McCarney, will be game changers for the program and the university.
"It's kind of hard going to a school that the football team is not very good," said UNT sophomore Stephanie Austin.
Football may not be UNT's claim to fame, but the university wants to change that to change.
"In order for the university to gain exposure and be recognized on a national basis, it's important for the university to have a comprehensive and competitive athletic program," said Paul Batchelder, with North Texas Athletics.
The school is optimistic the new $79 million dollar stadium and new coach will do the trick.
"We feel that the pieces are on the board and we just got to bring some W's to the board," Batchelder said.

The school and students aren't the only hopeful ones in town. Denton stores are selling spirit items for the first time.
"It is the first year that we are doing it. We are doing really really well. I have people call me every day asking about dresses," said Rhinestones Boutique employee Erica Stein.
"It's a win for the fans. It's a win for students like me, but overall, the play of the team will be totally up to them. I can't wait and see it," said UNT sophomore Michael Anunda.
The first home game takes place September 10 against the University of Houston.
