McKinney Students May Face Random Drug Testing

McKinney students may soon face random drug testing.

The McKinney Independent School District is considering a plan to randomly test 7th through 12th graders who are involved in extracurricular activities.

Officials with the district have not yet said why only students involved in extracurricular activities will be targeted for drug use.

Superintendent Tom Crowe said the program is aimed at helping kids caught up in substance abuse to get treatment early. Crowe said he would like to expand the program eventually.

The trustee board is expected to vote on the measure Monday.

If approved, the testing would begin in the 2009-10 school year.
