Man Shot When Boy Picks Up Fallen Gun

A man was shot in the face when he lunged for a handgun after it fell from his pocket while he slept and was picked up by a 3-year-old boy.

Houston police issued a release saying 20-year-old Patrick Sanders was in critical condition Monday at Ben Taub Hospital.

Investigators say Sanders was sleeping on a couch Saturday morning at an apartment when the gun fell to the floor. He awoke as the boy picked up the weapon. Sanders was shot as he reached for the gun. It wasn't clear if the child had his finger on the trigger or if Sanders hit it as he lunged for the gun.

Police are categorizing the shooting as accidental and the investigation continues.

The child was not injured.
