Man Shot Dead After Argument Over Fireworks: Sheriff

A man in his 80s was shot in the head after an argument about noise from fireworks, according to the Wise County Sheriff

An 80-year-old man was killed in a shootout that started over a dispute about fireworks near Lake Bridgeport at about 10:25 p.m. Saturday, according to the Wise County Sheriff.

A group of people were using fireworks on Church Street when a neighbor, identified as Edard Cordero, came over to complain about the noise. An argument ensued and Cordero returned to his home to get a firearm, the sheriff said.

A sheriff's spokesman said the argument escalated when Cordero opened fire on a 33-year-old man, who also retrieved a gun from his vehicle. The man returned fire, shooting Cordero in the head, deputies said.

Cordero was flown by medical helicopter to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth where he was pronounced deceased.

No criminal charges have been filed, though charges may be filed in the near future, the sheriff said.
