Man Pushing Ice Cream Cart Shot Twice in Possible Robbery Attempt

Police are searching for suspects after a man pushing an ice cream cart was shot Wednesday afternoon at a Fort Worth apartment complex.

According to investigators, officers were dispatched to the Manitoba Apartments located at 2901 Gunnison Trail for a shooting call.

When they arrived, they found a man suffering from two gunshot wounds. Officers were told by witnesses at the scene that they had seen two males leaving the scene after the shots were heard.

The victim had been pushing an ice cream cart and police believe this was a robbery attempt. The victim was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.

That victim has since been identified as Ruben Rivera, by a Go Fund Me campaign created to help his family. According to the campaign, he has since undergone three surgeries and is currently unable to work.

Rivera has spent the last 20 years as a “Paletero Man,” someone who sells ice-cream and other snacks on a cart he pushes around neighborhoods. He is the sole provider for his family.

The campaign has raised almost $3,000 to help the family with "day to day living expenses (rent, utilities, groceries)." You can find the Go Fund Me here.

This investigation is ongoing.
