Man Guilty of Killing Houston-Area Police Officer

A jury has found a 23-year-old man guilty of capital murder in the Christmas Eve killings two years ago of a Houston-area police officer and an auto body shop owner.

The Harris County jury deliberated about two hours Friday before returning its guilty verdict on Harlem Lewis III. He was on trial in the deaths of  Bellaire officer Jimmie Norman and auto body shop owner Terry Taylor.

Prosecutors say Norman had stopped Lewis for a traffic violation, got into a struggle with him and was shot. Authorities say Taylor was shot when he tried to help Norman.

Jurors can now sentence Lewis to life in prison without parole or death by lethal injection.
