A jury has sentenced a man to 45 years in prison for sexual assaulting an infant believed to be one of the youngest victims ever seen by North Texas authorities.
Authorities say 40-year-old Derek Wryan Wilson was convicted Thursday of aggravated sexual assault of a child under 6, a charge that carries no possibility of parole.
The jury deliberated only 30 minutes before rendering their verdict. About three hours later, the jury sentenced him to 45 years behind bars with a $10,000 fine.
Authorities said Wilson digitally penetrated his girlfriend's 10-week-old daughter and that he told them he was "curious" about the infant's anatomy and wanted to know what it felt like.
Prosecutors said the infant's grandmother went into the girl's room in July after hearing her cry and found Wilson holding the baby.
The child was rushed to Cook Children's Medical Center after noticing blood in her diaper and that her genitalia was actively bleeding.
A doctor testified the infant was the youngest victim of sexual assault the doctor had examined in 22 years of practice.
