Man Dies in Rockport Police Custody, 2 Officers Hurt

Texas Rangers will help investigate the in-custody death of a man following a disturbance in Rockport.

A city statement says two officers suffered minor injuries in Tuesday night's altercation in Rockport, 25 miles northeast of Corpus Christi. Aransas County sheriff's deputies also responded.

Department of Public Safety Trooper Nathan Brandley said Thursday that officers responded to a disturbance involving a woman and 40-year-old Wesley Manning, of Fulton. Brandley says officers tried to arrest Manning, but he became combative, then unresponsive when taken into custody.

Brandley had no information on restraint techniques used by officers, who provided first aid to Manning before medical responders arrived.

Manning died at a hospital. Autopsy results are pending.

DPS had no details on the woman.

The Aransas County Sheriff's Office didn't immediately comment Thursday.
