Man Charged With Illegal Collection Of $24k In Unemployment

A Massachusetts man has been charged with using a Texas man's Social Security number to fraudulently collect nearly $24,000 in unemployment benefits in Connecticut.

Daniel Cordova, of Holyoke, Massachusetts, was arraigned Tuesday in New Britain Superior Court on charges of larceny in the first degree by defrauding a public community and unemployment compensation fraud. The 35-year-old Cordova had been arrested in Massachusetts and was returned to Connecticut authorities.

Investigators say Cordova, who previously worked for a Connecticut company, used the Social Security number assigned to a Texas man to fraudulently collect approximately $23,591 in unemployment benefits from November 2008 through May 2011.

Cordova's bond was set at $1,000 cash. His case was continued to June 16.

It's unclear whether Cordova has a lawyer who could comment on the charges.
