DeSoto police said they responded to an aggravated robbery call at the Waffle House in the 1500 block of North Beckley Avenue at 2:30 a.m. July 7.

Officers arrived at the restaurant and found a man — later identified as 26-year-old Antione Devon Cooper, according to police — shot in the parking lot.

Police said witnesses told them Cooper went into the restaurant armed with an AK-47, robbed several customers as well as the restaurant and left.

Witnesses told police that one of the customers that was robbed — a Handgun License holder — was armed with a pistol. The customer followed Cooper into the parking lot to ensure he didn't harm his wife, who was on her way to the restaurant.

Police said the customer called out to Cooper, who turned around and pointed the rifle at him. The customer then shot Cooper several times.

Authorities said Cooper was transported to a hospital where he remains on life support.

Police said the customer was not arrested.
