Man Accused of Crashing into DPD Car Says He Can't Drive

A man arrested after crashing into a Dallas police car Thursday told NBC 5 from jail Friday that he didn't do it.

A Dallas police officer was sitting at a red light when a Chevrolet Suburban crashed into his squad car at about 12:40 a.m., authorities said.

Police arrested 28-year-old Jose Rey Chavez-Nino and charged him with driving the SUV while intoxicated. In a jailhouse interview with NBC 5, though, Chavez-Nino said — through a translator — that he wasn't driving.

Chavez-Nino admitted that he had been drinking before riding in the SUV the night of the crash, but he said he lied to police when he told them he was driving. He told NBC 5 he doesn't even know how to drive.

Dallas police have not yet responded to Chavez-Nino's claims.

The officer that was hit has since been released from Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital.
