Marshals went to the Sunset Terrace apartment complex in the 9100 block of Forest Lane at about 6:30 a.m. to serve warrants to Robert James Coveington, who refused to exit the apartment, according to authorities.

Marshals reported hearing at least one gunshot, but none of the officers were fired upon.

Deputies said they called Dallas Police Department SWAT officers to assist at about 7 a.m.

Dallas County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Melinda Urbina confirmed that the standoff was over just before 10 a.m.

In a subsequent press release, the sheriff's department said initial indications are that the man died from a self-inflicted wound.

An exact cause of death will be confirmed by the medical examiner's office.

Authorities said Coveington was wanted in Nebraska on warrants for felony assault and possession of a weapon with intent to commit an assault.
