Lubbock Plaza Dedicated to Buddy Holly, Wife

About 200 people attended the official dedication of the Buddy and Maria Elena Holly Plaza in Lubbock.

The plaza named for Holly and his widow was dedicated Monday. The plaza also includes a life-size, bronze statue of the famed rock and roller.

Holly, a Lubbock native, died at the age of 22 in a 1959 plane crash.

Maria Elena Holly tells the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal that she can forsee families celebrating birthdays and weddings the plaza.

Travis Holley, the late Buddy Holly's older brother, says, "I think this is absolutely beautiful. I think the city has gone above and beyond."

Randy Truesdell, director of the city's parks and recreation department, says the plaza includes drought-tolerant landscaping and a lighting design that makes the Holly statue visible from Interstate 27.
