Longer Lines to Get a Driver's License

Virus causing slowdown at DPS

The Texas Department of Public Safety continued repair efforts Thursday after a virus hit one of its computer systems.

The DPS said the virus that hit Wednesday affected internal communications and some external services such as the issuance of Texas drivers' licenses.

DPS spokesman Tom Vinger says the state database on which Texas police agencies depend for checking for identities, warrants and criminal records is unaffected by the virus.

However, he says the department is "still having some problems with driver's license offices." About 80 percent of the offices have had computer service restored, and Vinger said efforts continue "to get the rest of them up."
