Loaded Gun Found in Lake Highland Student's Backpack

A student at the Lake Highlands Freshman Center was arrested Thursday after police said they found a loaded handgun in a backpack.

A police report said the student walked into the school smelling like smoke. That student was told to go to the front office, where the student's backpack was searched. The report said a loaded black handgun with a brown handle was discovered in the backpack.

The student was taken to a youth detention center. Due to age, the student's name has not been released.

Following the incident, Richardson Independent School District released a letter informing parents of the situation.

In the letter, Bill Gallo, principal of the Lake Highlands Freshman Center, said there was "no indication of any threat or intent to harm any student or staff member."
