Safe, Long Weekend at Joe Pool Lake

12,000 people estimated to fill the parks at Joe Pool Lake on Labor Day

It's been a very busy, but safe, long weekend at Joe Pool Lake.

There have been four drownings at the lake so far this year, including one that happened just a week and a half ago.

But both Lynn Creek and Lloyd Parks are sending an important message -- wear a life jacket when getting into the water.

Park workers have been emphasizing the importance of safety, and kiosks holding free live vests were availble for visitors to borrow.

An estimate 12,000 people were expected to make it out to the parks throughout Labor Day weekend. On Monday, every campsite at Lloyd Park was booked, and every boat at the Lynn Creek Marina was rented out.

Fort Worth Resident Ruben Ruiz said his family has been grilling at Lynn Creek Park's swim beach every Labor Day for the past six years. They got there early on Monday morning to make sure they got a picnic spot by the water.

"We get here at 7 o'clock and there is already people here," Ruiz said.

More than 5,000 people were expected to pack the swim beach on Monday. Beachgoers said they're thankful to take a day off from reality and enjoy the scenery.

"It just means relaxation, enjoying family, friends, not worrying about anything. Just having a great time and just taking it down a notch," said Arlington resident Stephanie Hiatt.

Park officials said Labor Day was the park's fourth busiest holiday. They also said it was the last time they'll see a large crowd out at the swim beach.
