Judge Recuses Himself From Veteran's Parade Crash Trial

A judge is declining to explain why he's recusing himself from a lawsuit that sprung from the West Texas train crash last year that killed four veterans participating in a parade.

State District Judge Rodney Satterwhite stepped aside from the case without explanation. He said Wednesday his policy is not to discuss any active or pending cases.

A retired judge from Big Spring, Robert H. Moore III, has been appointed to replace him.

Nine of the 12 couples on the float the train hit at 62 mph Nov. 15 have filed suit, accusing Union Pacific of negligence.

The railroad says Midland County and city officials and the parade organizer failed to exercise "ordinary care" in parade plans.

The accident remains under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board.
