Judge Orders Texas Death Row Inmate Mental Evaluation

A Texas death row inmate faces another mental evaluation as he seeks to drop his appeals in the 2012 slaying of an Austin police officer.

A judge on Friday ordered the psychiatric review of Brandon Daniel.

Jurors last year convicted Daniel in the April 2012 fatal shooting of Officer Jaime Padron as he answered a disturbance and shoplifting call at a Wal-Mart. Daniel has acknowledged being under the influence of an anti-anxiety drug.

The ex-software engineer was convicted of capital murder but seeks to drop automatic appeals, represent himself and be executed. Daniel prior to trial had a competency review.

Daniel earlier wrote the judge saying he wanted to drop appeals so justice could be served and to spare the victim's family and his own from more angst.
