Irving City Council Approves Public Smoking Ban

Members of the Irving City Council voted 6-3 Thursday night to ban smoking in public places.

The smoking ban applies to restaurants, sports cafes, billiard halls and public parks.

Eight restaurants are exempt from the new ordinance, though, because their owners spent thousands of dollars installing ventilation systems to meet the requirements of a 2006 smoking ordinance. The businesses would lose their exemptions if they change locations or if the building is destroyed.

Under the approved ordinance, all new businesses and locations without the correct ventilation system must not allow smoking.
