The Hurst Police Department and City Life Church members hope a tennis court they turned into a soccer field will steer kids away from a life of crime.
"It was a place where homeless and drug addicts came," said Jim Faber, associate pastor at City Life Church.
That was before he and members of the Hurst Police Department teamed together to bring change to the neighborhood.
The Hurst Police Department and City Life Church started the project at the end of May. With a contracting company and a group of volunteers, they've replaced fencing, painted the court, and cleared brush in the area.
Officer Miguel Jimenez knew the location would be a great place to revitalize after spending time patrolling the area. He believed it was a great way to show the community he serves that he cares.
"We want them to know that we're not just out there to take bad guys to jail," he said. "We're out here to help the community, make it a better place."
Families who live in the apartment complex are taking notice. Hector Castro, 55, expects his son to use the court. He also expects his grandchildren will play there whenever they visit.

"It makes me want to come home and say what did you do son and hear the stories. What did you do grandson? I mean it's fantastic."
Once the court is complete, the organizing groups will start looking for other projects in the area.
