Hundreds of flights have been canceled and thousands of air travelers stranded during a North Texas winter storm that should ease later this weekend.

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for the Dallas-Fort Worth area until Saturday night. Temperatures were expected in the upper 40s Sunday.

Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport spokesman David Magana says about 700 flights were canceled Saturday.

Magana says about 600 flights were canceled Friday, amid icy conditions, forcing about 5,000 travelers to spend the night. DFW airport personnel provided cots, blankets and toiletries to the passengers.

Runways were open Saturday but federal aviation authorities, for about two hours, limited incoming flights. The ground stop was lifted around 8 a.m. CST.

Fort Worth-based American Airlines canceled about 600 flights systemwide Saturday.
