OLYMPICS

How To Be an Olympics Nerd

With just six months to go until the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, here are six quirky facts you can drop into casual conversation:

1.  Rio will be the first Olympics with athletes born in the year 2000.

2.  Rugby Sevens will make its Olympic debut. It's similar to rugby, but teams have fewer players and matches are shorter.

3.  There will be a group of athletes who've been forced to flee their countries. They will compete under the Olympic flag.

4.  Rio's mascot is named "Vinicus." It's a blue and yellow creature that represents Brazil's wildlife.

5.  Golf returns for the first time since the 1904 Olympics in St. Louis.

6.  Rio's taxi drivers, known as "taxistas," are being offered free online English lessons.

Congrats!  Now you are an official Olympics nerd -- like me. The Summer Olympics from Rio begin Aug. 5 on NBC.
