Houston-Area Couple Accused of Enslaving Nigerian Woman

A federal grand jury has indicted a Houston-area couple accused last month of enslaving a woman recruited from Nigeria as a domestic servant.

A U.S. Attorney's statement says 56-year-old Chudy Nsobundu and his 50-year-old wife, Sandra Nsobundu, were charged in a five-count indictment returned in Houston on Tuesday. The indictment accuses the pair of forced labor, withholding documents, visa fraud, conspiracy to harbor and harboring a person in the country illegally.

A message left with the couple's attorney drew no response.

An affidavit says the couple recruited the woman in Nigeria with the promise of a $100 monthly wage.

Instead, they're accused of abusing the woman physically and verbally, denying her compensation or outside contact. The woman was rescued Oct. 10 after more than two years of servitude.
