A plan to set up a $2 billion state water fund is coming up for a vote, and some conservative activists are opposing it.
The Texas House is expected to debate the new fund on Tuesday and take a vote on the plan. The fund would serve as a bank to help state and local authorities build $53 billion in water projects over the next 50 years.
Experts say the Texas population is quickly outgrowing the amount of fresh water available. Gov. Rick Perry wrote an editorial last week saying the State Water Infrastructure Fund was the key to keep the state's economy growing.
But conservative activists at the Texas Public Policy Fund oppose taking money from the Rainy Day Fund and say lawmakers need to control their spending.
