House Fire Erupts in Town Without Water

A house fire in Kemp was a nightmare for the town, which has been without running water since Sunday.

The town shut off all its water Sunday afternoon after its two water tanks were tapped because of the extreme heat. Workers were in the process of refilling the tanks when the fire at a house on Main Street started.

Neighbor Lanita Grayson watched in fear as her town's fire department battled the blaze without its own water supply.

"You can't really put out a fire if you don't have water," she said.

Firefighters relied on a portable water tank from Kaufman County and the help of neighboring fire departments.

It's still unclear how severe the damage to the home is, but no one was injured.

Kemp Mayor Donald Kile expects water to be running again by 4 p.m. Tuesday at the latest.
