Fort Worth police said the homeowner heard his dogs barking outside his home on the 7500 block of Trimble Drive. He went outside, saw the man in his yard, identified himself and then fired several times.

The homeowner apparently missed and then began throwing items found in his back yard.  One of those items hit the man, injuring him.

"Upon further investigation, detectives have learned that the injury sustained by the suspect was caused by blunt force trauma to the head. The homeowner fired a handgun at the suspect several times and it was believed by the homeowner that the injury was caused by gunfire," said Fort Worth police spokeswoman Sr. Cpl. Tracey Knight. "However at some point during the incident, the homeowner threw an object at the prowler and the object is what caused the injury. The 42-year-old suspect is being treated at a local hospital for his injuries at this time."

The man was transported to a nearby hospital where he remains in critical condition.

Police said they are investigating the shooting and interviewing the homeowner and his family.
