Homebuyer Tax Credit Going Tick-Tick-Tick

First-time homebuyers who want to take advantage of an $8,000 federal tax credit have until midnight Friday to sign a contract.

Real estate agents say they're in a rush to get deals done. Coldwell Banker real estate agent Michele Lafortune said her office has seen plenty of business in the last few weeks with buyers looking to cash in.

"It's been incredibly busy," she said. "We actually, in our office, it was amazing, the board was full -- full of new clients."

Buyers have to have their contracts in by midnight, but Lafortune said have a little bit more time to finish their deals. Any deal signed before April 30 also has to be closed by June 30 to be eligible for the $8,000 credit.

Sylvie Leclerc, who loves the high ceilings in the Irving home she moved into three weeks ago, said she also loves the tax credit.

"It was good for us, because we know we would get reimbursed for part of it," she said.
