Historic Black Church Backs the Blue

Sunday service always starts with hymns at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Mansfield.

But for the first time, the cry of bagpipes filled the room.

Sunday, the predominantly black church dedicated its service to those who serve the community.

"It's important to do it because of the climate across the country," said Michael Evans, a pastor at the church. "There has to be a bridging of the gap, we believe, between law enforcement and the local community."

"We make things work when we are one accord, when we have the same mind, and when we have the same hopes for the success of the community," said Evans.

Words he hopes will reach up and out.
