Police say an 11-year-old boy was killed Tuesday morning on Highway 161 in Irving.
It happened just before 7 a.m. Police believe the boy was on his way to school when he was hit trying to cross the road from the west side of the highway to the east. Police say he died at the scene. The driver who hit him stopped at the scene and called police, as did several other drivers who saw the accident.
The southbound lanes were closed at W. Rochelle Road and all vehicles were forced to exit at W. Northgate Drive.

The boy's identity has not been released.
"We are grieving for the loss of a young life, and we pray for the family and friends most affected by this loss," Irving ISD Superintendent of Schools Jose L. Parra, Ed.D. said in a statement. "Our entire district extends heartfelt condolences to the family at this difficult time."
Counselors will be available at the school to provide support to students and staff affected by this loss.
