High Winds Cause Problems Around DFW

40-50 mph gust front catches boaters and others off guard

High winds gusts caused plenty of dust and a few water rescues at local lakes.

At NBC 5 Meteorologist Grant Johnston tweeted on NBCDFW Weather, "gusty outflow winds moving into Metroplex along a line from Dallas to Denton."

Shortly after, there were reports of a crane collapse on the campus of the University of Texas-Dallas in Richardson.  Johnston said winds were near 50 miles per hour in the area at the time of the collapse.

There were also several water rescues as swimmers and boaters tried to deal with the rough weather.:

-3:15 p.m.: Dallas Police and Dallas Fire Rescue responded to possible drowning at White Rock Lake. Police told NBC a 55-year-old man and his 21-year-old son were on separate surfboards when the winds blew through.  Both fell into the water. The son swam the shore. But the father went under the water.  The dive team is now trying to find the father.

-Dallas Fire Rescue also reported three water rescue calls at Lake Ray Hubbard.  Two of the boats were safely pulled back to shore.  Crews are looking for a third.

As of 5:30 p.m., the ONCOR power map shows more than 6,000 customers in Dallas County without power.
