High School Student Elected to Azle School Board

High school senior welcomes new role

Moses Druxman isn't your typical high school senior. That's because the 18-year-old Azle High School student is also school district's newest board member.

Druxman, elected just last Saturday, has heard it all before from naysayers who said he's too young or that he doesn't know what he's doing.  But none of that bothers Druxman.

"I've tried to express to them I'm 18-years-old, but in my opinion, and many others in the community, I'm wise beyond my years," said Druxman.

Moses is well known in the Azle community. He is a volunteer firefighter, he works at the local bank, he works with legislators and he even finds time to volunteer with various community organizations. So, when he put out signs announcing his campaign, people knew he meant business.

With 362 votes, Druxman won his seat on the board while beating out a former school board member and two local business leaders. He bested his nearest rival by 158 votes, proving Druxman has the moxy to get the job done.

Azle Independent School District superintendent Dr. Ray Lea said he wasn't surprised that Druxman won.

"He's a special kid and he's wise beyond his years and we're really excited for Moses. I think this is going to be great for him," said Lea.

Classmates Emily Ditmore said Moses is an inspiration whose decision to run, and win a spot on the school board, illustrates that it's possible to achieve the unimaginable.

"For somebody my age doing something like that, it inspires me to do more and be more than I ever thought I could," said Ditmore.

Soon, Druxman will join his fellow board members and get right down to business dealing with the school budget crunch that has affected so many districts around the state.  But first, there is graduation.
