High Court Declines to Hear Exorcism Case

The U.S. Supreme Court has refused to consider the case of a former Colleyville woman who said she was the victim of a forced exorcism.

The high court declined Wednesday to hear the appeal brought by Laura Schubert Pearson, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported in its online edition.

Pearson alleged some members of the Pleasant Glade Assembly of God held her down and she was hurt during a 1996 forced exorcism, when she was 17.

The Texas Supreme Court last year threw out a jury award Pearson received for her injuries, reasoning that it unconstitutionally drew the court into religious matters.

Lawyers for the church, which has merged with another Colleyville congregation, maintained the case was a personal injury lawsuit and concerned protected religious conduct.

Pearson now lives in Georgia, the newspaper reported.
