Heavy Rain Puts Damper on High School Baseball Playoffs in NTX

Many baseball fields around North Texas are now flooded after a night of heavy rain.

High school athletic administrators scrambled to find enough fields to host games for the playoffs Friday.

“It's a struggle to find some dry fields right now,” said Gil Garza, Dallas ISD Director of Athletics. “But we're doing everything we can.”

Field crews worked around the clock Friday to get baseball fields in North Texas ready for dozens of games scheduled for the weekend.

“We're working frantically to get some of our fields dry,” said Garza. “It's a process that takes time. We got a lot of rain last night.”

Garza says they're searching as far as a 100 miles away looking for fields suitable for play.

“Our crews are working frantically,” said Garza. “We’re looking for other fields. Our opponents are doing the same thing.”

“I think everyone in this part of the country is scrambling to get these two out of three series done,” said Mansfield Legacy High School Baseball Coach David Walden. “I really hope that we can get at least two of them done today.”

Many other teams are also trying to play two games on Friday to beat a second round of rain expected to hit North Texas Friday night.

“We are just trying to get as many games in as we can before the rain gets really bad,” said Garza. “And it’s already bad and my understanding it’s going to be worse tomorrow.”
