“No Danger” From Radioactive Material in Arlington Fire

Radioactive materials inside an Arlington facility that caught fire Thursday morning pose no public threat, fire officials say.

Lt. Kevin Seeton with the Arlington Fire Department said the radioactive materials come from X-ray machines sold by MPM Products, which owns the facility that caught fire at 415 Lillard Road.

According to the company's website, the facility "houses a calibration facility for radiation detection equipment, a service and repair facility for [non-destructive testing] NDT Equipment, a stocking distribution facility for NDT supplies"

Non-destructive testing equipment listed on the company's website includes X-ray machines, radiation detectors and other items that may contain radioactive materials.

As a precaution, the area around the fire, primarily Lillard Road, near the intersection of Division Street and Bowen Road, will be shut down for several hours.
