Harris County Approves First Post-Harvey Property Buyouts

Harris County Commissioners unanimously have approved the buyout of nearly three dozen properties flooded in Hurricane Harvey.

The vote Tuesday is the first by the county's governing board to address buyouts of properties inundated by Harvey in late August and in previous storms before they are again rebuilt.

The vote covers 34 properties along the San Jacinto River east of Houston. The Houston Chronicle reports money for the purchases comes from a $20 million county fund that eventually is intended to buy out about 200 homes repeatedly flooded.

The Harris County Flood Control District has received buyout requests from more than 3,000 property owners.
