Woman, 77, Uses Hammer to Fight Off Intruder

A Birmingham, Alabama woman used a hammer to protect herself during a home invasion early Tuesday morning.

Mary Finch, 77,  was asleep in her home when she was confronted by an intruder trying to get into her bedroom.

"He started to push in and he and I wrestled at the door for a while but he overpowered me and come on in," she said.

Finch described her intruder as a 17- or 18-year-old male carrying a gun.

"'Where your money at? Where your money at? Where your money at?' I told him, 'I don't have any money,'" Finch said.

Moments later, with the holding a gun on her, Finch quietly grabbed a hammer on an end table and decided to defend herself.

"I said, 'If you're going to shoot, you better shoot,' I said, 'I'm going to get you,' I said about three times 'Are you going to shoot?,' I kept going like this, and he made a move towards me and I hit him on his hands, hit him on his fingers," she said.
