Grand Prairie police said the culprits broke through the glass door of the Shell gas station in the 3900 block of Farm-to-Market Road 1382 at about 6 a.m.
The store's manager said five men wrapped a chain around the ATM, but were unable to move it. The men then ran from the scene, leaving the van behind.
Police told NBC 5 that it is believed the men are inexperienced and may have been inspired by the recent rash in ATM-related crime.
NBC 5's Ellen Bryan contributed to this report.
