Lt. Pedro Barineau with the Garland Police Department said Tuesday afternoon multiple people called 911 just before 2 p.m. to report a man swinging two knives and "acting crazy" toward drivers.
"The reports that we got were that the subject was swinging the knives at cars passing by in the parking lot as well as in the roadway," Barineau said.
The latest news from around North Texas.
Officers confronted the man near the intersection of Bass Pro Drive and Interstate 30. During the confrontation shots were fired by one officer and the man was killed at the scene.
Barineau said the medical examiner will determine the man's identity.
Once the man's body has been moved police will be able to get a closer look at the weapons to determine what type of knives he was carrying.
"We were told machetes, but we don't want to confirm machetes until we can inspect the body," said Barineau.
The westbound entrance to I-30 will be closed during the investigation. Drivers are encouraged to avoid the area and expect delays.
