Fuel Spill Closes Eastbound Side of Interstate 20 in Kaufman County

The highway remained close at 9 p.m. Saturday

A fuel spill closed the eastbound side of Interstate 20 in Kaufman County Saturday evening, officials say.

Two crashes, one of which involved a wrecker towing an tractor-trailer, shut down the highway after one of the vehicles involved started to leak fuel onto the road, according to the College Mound Fire Department.

Nine people were involved in the crashes, which happened just after 5:30 p.m., and three were taken to area hospitals -- two by ambulance and one by helicopter. Everyone who was injured was expected to recover, officials said.

A hazmat crew responded to the scene and was still working to clear the spill as of 9 p.m. Saturday.

The College Mound Fire Department said eastbound I-20 is closed at FM 429. Texas Department of Public Safety troopers and the Texas Department of Transportation are working to redirect traffic.
