Sgt. Shane Drake underwent emergency surgery Thursday after being shot twice – once in the stomach.

Police officials said Sgt. Drake's condition has stabilized and they are hopeful he will make a full recovery.

Thursday evening officers responded to a residential panic alarm in the 4800 block of Hildring Drive in southwest Fort Worth.

The officers left when the homeowner told them the alarm appeared to be false. Then, 30 minutes later, officers were called back to the house by a woman who was worried about her adult son.

A Fort Worth police officer is injured and a suspect is dead after shots were fired during a welfare check in the 4800 block of Hildring Drive.

“They knocked on the [bedroom] door several times. The homeowner knocked on the door several times,” said Cpl. Tracey Knight. “At the homeowner’s request, they attempted to make entry into the house – into the room of the house. That’s when the shots rang out and it was basically a gun battle.”

Sgt. Drake was struck twice. Fort Worth police said fellow officers worked on saving his life while also returning fire.

“Their leader went down and their training kicked in,” said Cpl. Knight.

The shooter, who was later identified as 40-year-old Wendell King, was shot and killed by officers.

The entire shootout was caught on a police body camera worn by one of the responding officers.

Cpl. Knight said she had seen the video.

“It is compelling and terrifying,” said Knight. “Officers handled themselves amazingly. Absolutely amazingly.”

Knight said Fort Worth police had responded to the home before, and it was flagged as a hazardous or dangerous location but that officers had no reason to suspect during this particular welfare call there was a weapon involved or the parties involved had intent to harm officers.

Sgt. Drake is a 19-year veteran of the Fort Worth Police Department.

Fort Worth Interim Police Chief Rhonda Robertson and Mayor Betsy Price give an update on the officer who was shot at a home Thursday night.

NBC 5's Katy Blakey and Todd L. Davis contributed to this report.
