Fort Worth Firefighter Wanted for Damaging U.S. Flags

Denton County Deputies are looking for a Fort Worth Firefighter.

Michael Wagemann is accused of ripping down and damaging two U.S. flags from the south side of the Denton County Courthouse on the early morning of Sept. 9.

The incident was captured on surveillance video then posted on social media by the Denton County Sheriff's Office to try to identify the suspect. The video has been viewed nearly 40,000 times.

Captain Orlando Hinojosa says tips led them to identify Wagemann as the suspect.

"That hit home because he is a public servant and should respect the flag more than that," he said.

Hinojosa says Wagemann was at a bar before the incident.

Wagemann, who has been employed by the Fort Worth Fire Department for seven years, had originally agreed to turn himself in at 5:30 p.m. Friday afternoon.

A department spokesperson says Wagemann left work in Fort Worth at 5 p.m. but failed to show up.

A warrant issued on Oct. 6, charging him with criminal mischief remains outstanding. Criminal mischief is considered a misdemeanor.

The Fort Worth Fire Department said Wagemann has been removed from any contact with the public and has been placed on desk duty until the matter is resolved.
